The conference will explore the various interconnected, yet sometimes unapparent, interests and themes related to water resource protection, wildlife habitat conservation, and human needs that are present in the Hudson River watershed. We hope to create a regional dialogue on how to more fully integrate watershed and biodiversity protection efforts while addressing the growing needs of the human community.

Our keynote speaker is Robert Glennon, Morris K. Udall Professor of Law and Public Policy at the University of Arizona and author of Water Follies. Robert will address groundwater pumping and the fate of our nation’s fresh water, citing examples of groundwater pumping gone awry—from potato fields in Minnesota to bottled water plants in Maine and suburban lawn watering in Massachusetts.

The conference will also feature:
  • Peter Groffman of the Institute of Ecosystem Studies on the importance of riparian zones.
  • Colin Apse of The Nature Conservancy on stream flow: balancing ecological and human needs.
  • Bob Schmidt of Hudsonia on American eels and the tributary/estuary connection.
  • Rene VanSchaak of the Greene County SWCD on how proactive planning has helped minimize impacts to water and wildlife in Greene County.
  • Ron Urban of Trout Unlimited on brook trout and the recreational function of streams.
  • Watershed Agricultural Council’s Whole Farm Program: providing food for people while minimizing impacts to water and wildlife.
